Professor Mctaggart

Many people have great teacher(s) who influenced his or her life. Professor Mctaggart was my great teacher.
He was a professor teaching English at my university in Korea. When I was a freshmen I registered his English writing class. His first homework was writing about last summer vacation. It was my first English writing.

As most (old?) Koreans do, I learned English from middle school to high school every 1 to 2 hours per week. During those 6 years I never wrote in English. I could read well English book and know grammar and words to some extent. Feeling uncomfortable, I did my best.

When he returned everyones' papers we couldn't find any good mark. Almost all the students got a C or below. Finally I saw mine. I saw BIG A. Everybody in the class, who came to my seat to see what happened, including me, was shocked. Why A? My paper was sea of red marks that indicated a lot of grammar, expression problem. Why A? I also had to ask to myself.
I could continue to get A for most of writing homework.

Prof. Mctaggart taught me and the class that English writing is not about grammar but it is about creativeness. The content is more important than the decoration box. You have to make readers to have fun. This is why today I am writing in English even still not so much comfortable with it as my native language, Korean.

Remembering my honorable great great Professor Mctaggart who passed away
2003.

Still his students remember him for his great teaching and generous
donation. He donated all his assets that he earned in his whole life as a
professor. Many stundent know how he lived and saved this money. The
Friendship scholarship that was established by the donation supports
many students.
